This Semester we will be studying Gothic Horror within the Victorian era, in particular, Charles Dickens 'Great Expectations'. At first, when I pictured Gothic Horror, I saw lots of Black, Darkness, and Pale, floppy- haired teenagers. But when I looked into it a bit more, I found out that it is actually a genre of literature which combines romance and horror. The Genre is believed to have been invented by the English Author, Horace Walpole, in 1764.
Over the Christmas period, we had to read the Great Expectations Novel. The Story was dark, mysterious, romantic; which easily links in the Gothic Horror Genre.
Personally, my Knowledge on the Victorian Era is very minimal, so I am extremely eager to get a better understanding and knowledge of that era and their Beauty ideals for the women and men, from the different classes and backgrounds.
The knowledge I do have from the Victorian times however, are that, The era spanned form around the late 1830's to the 1900's (1837-1901, to be precise). This period was during Queen Victorias reign which came after the Georgian period, followed by the Edwardian period. I am also aware that the ideal look for women in the Victorian age, was a plump full- figure, with a cinched waist, and that wearing makeup was seen as 'sinful'.
I am looking forward to this project alot, and am excited to expand my knowledge on the Victorian era, ways in which i can interpret Miss Havisham and Estella from the Novel, and learning more about Gothic Horror.
